Of those who have been part of Good For Kids' work in LaCarpio, Hanna Monte was among the most dedicated and enthusiastic. For several summers, Hanna's loving heart and contagious smile defined the summer youth camp sponsored by Good For Kids. Those who joined with her in that program treasure endless images of Hanna joyfully surrounded by children, as she generously gave of herself: that was her trademark. As a student in the Somers High School orchestra, Hanna was one of the primary movers in numerous fundraising projects that led to the construction of the Refuge For Girls in LaCarpio.   Sadly, after a year long battle against cancer, Hanna passed away on March 28th, 2011, at the age of twenty.

To perpetuate Hanna's giving spirit and dedication to young people in LaCarpio, Good For Kids established the Hanna Scholars program, which began by funding the required costs of uniforms and texts of deserving teenage girls in LaCarpio, thereby making it possible for them to remain in school long enough to complete their education through ninth grade.  We are proud that dozens of Hanna Scholars have since achieved that goal. With ongoing financial support from the Hanna Scholars program, these young 'Honors' designees were then able to pursue either their high school, vocational or, most recently, college education outside of LaCarpio.

                         First Cohort of Hanna Scholars
Each scholar receives support to cover the cost of required textbooks and school uniforms, thus allowing them to continue their pre-high school studies.  Since the program began, many of these young women have since gone on to earn their high school diplomas with others now pursuing a college degree,

Hanna Scholars Honors' Students
Each of these young women has successfully passed her ninth grade proficiency exams and, with support from the Hanna Scholars program, will now be attending either high school or vocational training outside of LaCarpio.
